There the stories of the Old and New Testaments, Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, apostles and saints were told in rich, deep colors of blue, red, and green that sparkled in the rays of the sun. Five windows representing the prophets are the oldest existing stained-glass window which can be seen in their original setting. They are in the Cathedral of Augsburg, Germany, and pre-date our patroness by more than two centuries. The entire stained-glass window above the altar refers to worship of God and to the priesthood.

In the first book of the Old Testament we read that after Abraham defeated Chedorlaomer, he went to Sodom. Then the king of Salem, Melchizedek, came to meet him and brought bread and wine Genesis Below this panel 2 we see Abraham about to kill his son, Isaac, and offer him in sacrifice to the Lord. The angel of the Lord stops him before he completes the act Genesis Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are Patriarchs of the Old Testament who were representatives or priests responsible for offering sacrifice on behalf of their people. To the left panel 3 is Ezekiel, a prophet and priest of the Old Testament, who saw a vision of the temple deserted by the glory of Yahweh Ezekiel 10 and the future temples in which the Lord returns Ezekiel He also defined the function of the temple ministers and gave details of public worship and the sacred calendar Ezekiel On the right panel 4 is Daniel, another prophet and priest.

Daniel tells of the re-establishment of the priesthood and the restoration of the altar and the temple. In Daniel 7 he tells us that the expected Kingdom of the Son of Man will include all nations, not just Jews, and that this kingdom will have no end. The book of Daniel is the last expression of Messianic prophecy in the Old Testament. The two top side panels represent symbols of the Eucharist. In Psalm the Lord says that he fed his people with the best of wheat panel 5 and honey from the rock panel 6.

The middle portion panel 7 depicts the Last Supper at which Jesus offers the sacrifice of Himself in the New Covenant. Jesus is our new High Priest; through the sacrifice of His death on the cross for us, we can now offer the perfect worship to the Father Mathew ; Mark ; Luke ; John 13 and 17; and 1 Corinthians The center panel panel 8 below this shows the Lord Jesus giving Holy Communion to one of His disciples. Jesus tells us in John 6: that whoever eats His body and drinks His blood will have life in Him.

The symbols of service, the basin and water pitcher, are in the foreground. In John Jesus tells us that what He has done for us we should do for one another. To the left panel 9 is St. John, the beloved disciple and one who was ordained by Jesus at the Last Supper. To the right pane 10 is St. Peter, the first pope and successor of Jesus Mathew In his hands is a scroll with Acts written on it. In this passage Peter declares that he and the other disciples are witnesses to the fact that Jesus is risen from the dead and that they have received the command to preach the Good News to the people and to carry on the work that He began.

The bottom panel panel 11 bears in Latin the words from 1 Corinthians 5: , which are a fitting summary of the entire window: Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus, Alleluia! Itaque epulemur in azymis sinceritatis et veritatis, Alleluia! Our Passover, Christ, has been sacrificed, Alleluia!

See a Problem?

Let us celebrate the feast with the bread of sincerity and truth, Alleluia! The stained glass window above the choir loft in the rear of the church depicts outstanding events in the life of our patron saint. In the diagram on page 9, the top portion panel 1 portrays her spiritual marriage to Jesus Christ.

On Shrove Tuesday the day before Ash Wednesday , , she had a vision of Jesus, Mary, and many other heavenly beings. Jesus placed a ring on her finger, calling her to Him in a special way. Below that panel 2 depicts a vision which took place in St. At this time Catherine received the stigmata, the marks of the five wounds of Jesus-hands, feet, and side-which remained invisible to all except Catherine until the time of her death. In panel 4 we see Catherine in the habit of the Third Order of St. Dominic, founder of a group of men who devoted their lives to preaching the word of God to the poor.

They also taught the people how to pray the rosary panel 3. Catherine was advisor to several popes and did much to bring about needed reform in the Church. In , she was responsible for ending the year residence of popes in Avignon by persuading Pope Gregory XI to return to the center of Catholicism to Rome. Rose of Lima , who was born in Lima, Peru, and took St. Catherine as her model and in many ways imitated her way of life.

She also was a member of the Third Order of St. That was a nice change, since I was expecting them to just leave that night, fully unprepared, and this made more sense. So we follow Pirogov as 2. So we follow Pirogov as he is preparing I was looking forward to following Anastasia's adventures but her character was painfully undeveloped. That was the biggest disappointment to me. The author struggled with telling instead of showing. Every time that we met a new character or went to a new location, there was a paragraph describing how it looked visually.

I ended up skipping over those paragraphs since I didn't care about the type of mustache that the new guy has. Or there would be a paragraph where it goes something like: Anna said "I am very upset by this news" as they sat down for dinner. Mar 04, Debra Jeakins rated it it was amazing. In the novel Anastasia is gravely wounded and is cared for and nursed back to health by the Czechs aboard a traveling hospital train.

During her stay she changes not only her name but her looks to become another person as she knows she is still being hunted down. The author plunges the reader back into old Russia. You can feel and "see" what the conditions and the lives were for the people trying to survive Lenin's nightmare. I had to keep reminding myself that this is a work of fiction not real.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge vs Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark

Real or not,the author did a great job at putting the reader into the story. In all fairness , there are a few spots in the book, not many where it got to be a little slow but all in all well worth the read if you love historical fiction. I received this e book free in exchange for an honest review. Fascinating I love how much historical accuracy was taken into account for this book.

Often historical fiction stories are written with a feel good bend, but not this one. It felt real, trying to implore the reader to feel the desperation of those times.

And it remains true that no one really wins in any war. I won this book on a goodreads. This book offers a look at what might have happened if Grand Duchess Anastasia had survived the murder of the imperial family. I liked that the author showed what life was life for several of the different factions. I also liked that he incorporated so many historical figures. Quite an intriguing story! I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway. I can tell a great deal of research went into this book.

I really feel like Anastasia got under-developed though and having some female femme fatale was very misplaced. The ending was also very lack-luster. I enjoyed the book until the last few chapters. Left a lot to be desired. Anyone who enjoys the mystique of the Romanov dynasty will just adore this book!

Ever since I was a child, I have been enthralled with the different stories of the Romanov mystery. This book did not disappoint! I enjoyed the character development throughout, but I did feel like some characters added in near the end didn't really match the feel for the rest of the book and that the ending felt slightly rushed.

St Catherine of Siena, Crown of Thorns.

Riveting story! This was an absorbing and exciting story that you don't want to miss. The characters were incredibly real and authentic. A truly great read. May 15, Douglas Derrer rated it it was amazing. On that fateful day in , Czar Nicholas signed abdication papers ending a year-old royal dynasty and beginning the Bolshevik rule of his vast country.

St. Catherine's Crown

He, his family, and all their retainers and servants were taken into custody by the secret police. A little over a year later in July , all of them were brutally executed by a Red Army firing squad. Or were they? In the chaotic melee of this bloody mass murder—one of many the Bolsheviks would perpetrate during their revolution—one family member, it was widely believed, managed to escape, although badly injured. Thus begins the fascinating tale written by Captain Martin Shelton, a retired Naval Officer with background in Soviet and Chinese studies.

He writes an intriguing tale of historical fiction based on his vast knowledge of the history, the politics, and the sociology of the area. One of the Czar's daughters, the lovely and vivacious Anastasia, was widely believed to have escaped the butchery. Her mother had told her of a secret enclave of White Russians just across the border in China to which her aunt attempted to escape and toward which Anastasia, almost entirely healed of her wounds except for a telling limp, decided, in her profound loss and desperation, to try to find.

However, once word begins to emerge of the escape of one of the daughters of the Czar, many forces come into play: those attempting to destroy Anastasia and those wanting to rescue the princess. Catherine's Crown, which she believes Anastasia carries with her or knows the whereabouts of.

This compelling tale will take you into a part of history, now, too often forgotten or neglected, yet enthralling in its power, conflict, and final resolution. As the forces of government evil, corruption, and violence concern us all in these politically turbulent times, St.

Nov 19, KC rated it really liked it Shelves: historical-fiction , action-adventure. Based on historical fact, this fast-paced story cleverly imagines an alternative scenario to what might have happened to Princess Anastasia Romanov after surviving the assassination of her family. Shelton interweaves additional story lines and characters into his book, which keeps things exciting and moving along nicely.

What if This is an intriguing novel. What might have happened if Anastasia had escaped the slaughter of her family. Also a look into the history of a little known part of the world.
