Christian intellectuals, in their critiques of the New Atheists, often point backwards to past skeptics, claiming that these are more worthy foes - names like George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell.

Robert G. Ingersoll is not as widely known as Richard Dawkins, but he was one of the fiercest atheist thinkers of the 19th century. This short work reveals many of the contentions of the New Atheists today are not new. For instance, Ingersoll complains of God's willingness to permit slavery. He quot Christian intellectuals, in their critiques of the New Atheists, often point backwards to past skeptics, claiming that these are more worthy foes - names like George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell.

He quotes ethical teachers of ancient history who spoke out harshly against slavery, lifting them up as moral paragons compared to the complacency of Yahweh. He also attacks God for allowing the slaughter of the Canaanites. He doubts the Bible is entirely inspired - instead, he thinks the "bad" teachings are not inspired and he approves of the "good" teachings but this is a very subjective judgment that he sees as resting upon reason. Of course, it must be acknowledged that not everything recorded in the Bible is necessarily approved by God e.

God did not want David to commit adultery with Bathsheba, nor to murder Uriah, but it is recorded nonetheless as a historical account. Other worn out contention of Ingersoll's is that Jesus did not speak on every single subject under the sun. He wants Jesus to distill clarity and guidance on every topic imaginable but this was not Jesus' main purpose.

The most interesting critique of Ingersoll's is that the crucifixion of Jesus depended on the depravity of the Jews of his day. Without their thirst for his blood, humanity would not have had the Cross and thus, forgiveness of sins. Ingersoll wonders why the Jews should have been so hostile to Jesus even if they had been bestowed God's law in the OT. Stephen Samuel Wise in his own words was critical towards the Christian community for their failure to rescue Jews from Europe during Nazi rule. He wrote that:. A Christian world that will permit millions of Jews to be slain without moving heaven by prayer and earth in every human way to save its Jews has lost its capacity for moral and spiritual survival. They have taken as lords beside Allah their rabbis and their monks and the Messiah son of Mary, when they were bidden to worship only One God. Muslim scholars have criticized Christianity, usually for its Trinity concept.

They argue that this doctrine is an invention, distortion of the idea about God, and presentation of the idea that there are three gods. Some have argued that Christianity is not founded on a historical Jesus, but rather on a mythical creation. Scholars and historians such as James H. Charlesworth caution against using parallels with life-death-rebirth gods in the widespread mystery religions prevalent in the Hellenistic culture to conclude that Jesus is a purely legendary figure.

Charlesworth argues that "it would be foolish to continue to foster the illusion that the Gospels are merely fictional stories like the legends of Hercules and Asclepius. The theologies in the New Testament are grounded on interpretations of real historical events…" [].

Of all religions, Christianity has been most associated with colonialism because several of its forms Catholicism and Protestantism were the religions of the European powers engaged in colonial enterprise on a global scale.

Historians have traditionally looked at Christian missionaries in one of two ways. The first church historians to catalogue missionary history provided hagiographic descriptions of their trials, successes, and sometimes even martyrdom. Missionaries were thus visible saints, exemplars of ideal piety in a sea of persistent savagery. However, by the middle of the twentieth century, an era marked by civil rights movements, anti-colonialism, and growing secularization, missionaries were viewed quite differently.

Instead of godly martyrs, historians now described missionaries as arrogant and rapacious imperialists. We have no reason to complain of this, since we are all wicked. In the Confessions, the Saint enumerates the crimes of which he was guilty in the cradle. But by God's free grace certain people, among those who have been baptized, are chosen to go to heaven; these are the elect. They do not go to heaven because they are good; we are all totally depraved, except insofar as God's grace, which is only bestowed on the elect, enables us to be otherwise.

Purgatory is not mentioned in the Bible, but the concept has existed since the early centuries of the Christian church. During the 16th century there were very substantial upheavals in the Christian church. Churches which have been founded since then Protestant churches do not have this belief. It is obviously not possible to know beyond doubt what the future holds.

However, Christians face their deaths with two confident beliefs that are both invigorating and comforting. Firstly, God is just. It is absolutely inconceivable that someone will suffer a fate that they do not deserve. Secondly, God is endlessly loving. Nothing in either life or death can separate people from the love of God that is in Jesus Christ the Lord.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. These words come from the closing chapters of the Bible.

He uses extravagant images of cities, weddings and homes. We may be surprised who we find in heaven.
